Section A. General Information

Q.A1 What is Litestep?

(Edited from readme.txt) Litestep is a shell replacement for Windows 95, 98, and
NT, that will give your Windows desktop the AfterSTEP
look & feel. It consists of a Wharf toolbar, a popup menu and some modules.
The Wharf toolbar is used to organize your most-used applications & modules.
The Popup menu will automatically give you access to all installed applications via its
included "Start Menu," as well as any other folders and applications you choose.
The modules are designed for particular functions, such as a clock, desktop shortcuts,
WinAMP plugin, Virtual Window Manager, CPU load monitor, etc.

Litestep was designed originally by Francis Gastellu, aka LoneRunnr/Aegis, gastellu@club-internet.fr. It has been
released under the GNU public license, and is now being worked on by a group of
programmers. More information on the development can be found at the end of the html
file included in the Litestep distribution.

Q.A2 Why should I use Litestep?

If you come from the Linux world and are used to AfterSTEP.

If having multiple desktops would make your work easier.

If you dislike Microsoft's shell or find it eats too much memory, CPU, and that it is
    not always stable.

If the look and feel of your desktop is important to you.

If you like to have something different from your friends.

Or simply to try a cool & stable alternative to Microsoft's shell.

Q.A3 If I don't know anything about programming, is Litestep too
advanced for me?
Well, experience in programming is not necessary to run Litestep. All you need is some
free time (someone remind me what that is), a bit of an eye for aesthetics, and some basic
understanding of computers. Make sure you read through all the documentation that comes
with the download, and look through this FAQ as well.

Section B. Getting & Installing Litestep

Q.B1 Where can I download Litestep?

You can get it from the official web site, www.litestep.net,
or many other mirrors including floach.pimpin.net
and litestep.m1crosoft.com. The latest
build is always available at litestep.ru.ac.za/builds.

Q.B2 How do I go about installing Litestep?

You'll download a zip file, probably ls-0.24.zip, then open up the zip
file in a program like WinZip. If you use WinZip, it will have a button called
"Install," so click that. If you use some other program to unzip the files into
a temporary folder, just run the setup program that's inside the zip. If you feel
like you're a master user, change the .dat file to a .rar file, and open it up in WinRar.

The setup program is a bit sparse on the user-friendlyness. It defaults
to installing into c:\litestep, and you must not install it over an existing directory, so
clear out your old c:\litestep directory (back it up to c:\litestep.old or something)
before running the installer. You can change the directory if you want, just remember that
you'll have to change the default step.rc a bit.

Click only once on the "install" button in the setup program.
It will not tell you what it's doing, or give a progress meter or anything. Just sit there
and be cool. If an error pops up at this point, hit "Ok" to the error box,
"Cancel" on the setup program, and try unzipping the whole thing to a different
folder and running the installer from there.

If all goes well, after about 15-30 seconds of apparent inactivity (maybe
your hard drive light will be blinking), a box will come up and ask if you want your
system.ini or registry to be changed so Litestep is your default shell, and if you're
running NT, it will ask if you want Litestep installed for all users or just the current
    user. It's up to you.

Then the readme.htm file will open. READ THIS. Heck, print it out - I
did. It's very long, but read it. The whole thing. It will cut down on the confusion. That
should do it. Logout and log back in, and you might have to recycle once before all the
    features lock in (I did).

Then go to work editing the step.rc with Notepad. DO NOT USE YOUR OLD
STEP.RC. Bad Things will happen. There are enough significant changes from the previous
release that the step.rc is structured a wee bit differently.

Q.B3 What are these patch things?

Patches are updates to files that were included in the original Litestep
distribution. To my knowledge, you do not need previous patches to install the
current patch (that is, you don't need to get 0.24.1 and 0.24.2 before you can get
0.24.3). They are available at www.litestep.net
and litestep.ru.ac.za/builds.
When you download these, they need to be unzipped over any existing files
in c:\litestep (or wherever you have Litestep). This means you have to quit
Litestep. This should work for Windows 95 and 98, and probably NT:

Open up your favorite file browser (Explorer, Servant Salamander,
    whatever) to your Litestep directory.

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del (NT, use Ctrl-Alt-Esc) and kill the process called
    "Litestep."

Unzip the patch into your Litestep directory. Hit "Yes"
if the program asks if you want to overwrite existing files.

Close your zip program and double-click on litestep.exe in the file
browser (did you remember to keep it open?). Litestep should open right up.

Just for the hell of it, hit Ctrl-Alt-Del (NT, use Ctrl-Alt-Esc) and kill
    any process called "Explorer."

You might need to logout and log back in to reset all the stuff in your
    system tray.

Section C. Litestep Configuration

Q.C1 What is the step.rc and what does it do?
The step.rc file is the configuration file that LiteStep reads whenever it loads or
recycles. It defines how LiteStep constructs the wharf, the virtual window manager, the
popup menus and all the other aspects of LiteStep. The readme.txt file in the LiteStep
distribution has almost-complete documentation on the parts of the step.rc.

Q.C2 Is there an easier way to configure LiteStep than editing the
step.rc?
Yes, download LiteStep Configuration
Editor (LCE) from (warning: it is still beta, so remember to backup your step.rc
first). As of this writing (21 Nov), LCE does not have support for quite a few
options available in Litestep release 0.24.

Q.C5 I made some changes to Litestep in my step.rc, but nothing
happened. How can I tell Litestep to update to reflect my new changes?
As of this release, Litestep requires a "recycle" to load any changes in the
step.rc. In the default configuration, either click the topmost wharf button
(System), then the "Recycle" button, or right-click the desktop to show the
pop-up menu, and click "Recycle."

Section D. Popup Menu

Q.C6 How can I get the control panel in a popup menu?
Follow this simple set of steps:

Make a folder such as c:\litestep\control panel\

Make shortcuts to all the control panels you want in there.

Add this line to your step.rc file:

*Popup "Control Panel" !PopupFolder:"c:\litestep\control panel\"

Q.C7 I noticed that !PopupPrograms under Window NT doesn't show
contents of the Programs menu for the "All Users" profile.
Just add a !PopupFolder entry for "c:\winnt\profiles\all users\start
menu\programs" and call it "Common" or something.

Q.D8 Why are there gaps between my popup entries? I'm still using the same popup
bitmaps as in b23.
The default pop graphic size has been changed from 17 to 20. Resize your popup bitmaps to
20 pixels tall. (Todd Kadrie, tin_omen@mindless.com)

Q.S8 How can I get back my "New" listing that I used to be able to get when I
right-clicked on the desktop to make a new file?
Make a directory somewhere (anywhere) named "New" then call it as a popup like
this:
    *Popup "New" !PopupFolder:E:\New
Then, all you have to do is add shortcuts to your hearts content to that folder, renaming
them appropriately. For instance instead of having a shortcut in there named
""Shortcut to Notepad.exe"" rename it "Text File" so that it
fits with the context (New - Text File). (Gordy Robbins, Utility_Oper@communityonline.net)

Q.F9 My popup menu goes off the top/bottom of the screen, as I have more entries in my
start menu than anyone in their right mind should. I'm sure as heck not going to
clean out my start menu, so what can I do?
This is being looked at currently. Bryan suggests using a smaller popup font and size in
the meantime, eg:
PopupSubMenuHeight 12
PopupFontHeight 12

Section E. Wharf & Graphics

Q.D2 One of my icons is the right colour, the rest are on acid.
You're running at too small a colour depth. Either increase the colour depth of your
display (16 bit or higher is preferred) or dither all of your icons to the same 256 colour
windows palette.

Q.D3 The 3-D effect on my taskbar seems to be reversed. When I click on
a button, it pops out not in, and my system tray is popped out not in.
Sounds like you have LSTaskBarFore and LSTaskBarFore2 the wrong way around. Swap these
values and the 3-D effect should look right.

Q.D4 The description of 0.24 says it supports .ico files. I haven't been able to use
any .ico files, what gives?
For .ico files, you have to use the .extract command (documented in readme.txt) instead of
just typing in the name of the icon file. For example:
To use a .ico file:
*Wharf "Example" .extract=c:\icons\icon.ico example.exe
To get the second icon out of a .dll file (icon library):
*Wharf "Example2" .extract=c:\icons\systemicons.dll,1 example2.exe

Q.D5 Can I have a different background for each virtual window?
No, not really. There is a workaround here, if you make a background that is four times
the size of your screen, then put different images in each corner, you will effectively
have a different background for each window. (Many people have not been able to get this
to work, if you have, please email me at omaha@tmbg.org
with how you did it exactly.)

Q.D8 How do I make a screenshot so I can show all my friends just
how cool my desktop looks now that I've installed LiteStep?
Follow this simple set of steps:

Arrange your desktop as you want it (windows, popup menu etc).

Hit the [Print Screen] button.

Open your favourite graphics editor.

Create a new blank file the size of your desktop (eg 800x600).

Hit [Ctrl]-[V] (for paste).

Save the file (preferably in .JPG or .GIF format to put it on the web).

Once you've taken your cool screenshot, why not add it to the screenshot registry?

Q.D9 Do all the icons on the wharf have to be the same size? If you
simply change the size of all the icons will that make the wharf smaller?
No, each icon in the wharf must be 64x64. There's currently no way to make the wharf
smaller other than autohiding it.

Q.D10 How do I make transparent icons?
When designing your icons, just paint the color magenta (255, 0, 255 RGB or #FF00FF) where
you want the transparency.

Q.D11 Okay, I made some transparent icons, why do they have a
magenta halo around them?
You have to turn off anti-aliasing when you're filling in with magenta. In
Photoshop, there's a checkbox you must de-check when using the paint bucket tool.

Q.G4 My wharf scrolls in and out really slowly.
Close any extra copies of explorer.exe you are running or add WharfNoAnim to your step.rc.

Q.G8 Can anyone here enlighten me as to why LS uses RGB hex values in reverse? In
other words, LS uses BBGGRR instead of RRGGBB which is pretty standard.
That's what Windows uses internally (our policy is to always blame Microsoft for things
like this). Therefore, it was easier to write a program that just converted the values
directly to the windows COLORREF, which is BBGGRR. There is an undocumented step.rc
entry ColorRGB which if set, will interpret all your colour settings as RRGGBB. (Bryan
Killian, bryan@rucus.ru.ac.za)

Q.G9 I want to make a theme. Is there a FAQ for this kind of thing?
Tin Toys, at http://tinomen.home.ml.org, has a
bit of something that Todd Kadrie wrote on just that subject. Also check http://litestep.m1crosoft.com/themes/b24/info.html,
Damian Hodgkiss's guide.

Section F. Modules

Q.E1 Where can I find the latest modules?
Floach's site, floach.pimpin.net, is the source for
the latest Litestep modules and updates, as well as www.litestep.net,
the official Litestep web site.

Q.E2 My CPU monitor is always pegged to the max, why?
You're probably just doing alot of work, or maybe you're running RC5, which uses up all available CPU cycles.
CPU coolers like Rain, etc. also take all unused cycles to send sleep commands to the CPU,
so the CPU usage seems to be 100% - blame Windows.

Q.E4 What timeserver can I use for NTP in LSClock?
Find a list of timeservers at www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/servers.html.

Q.E5 My clock looks all scrambled in NT.
You probably have .none defined as the background for the clock module. Try using
Default.bmp or your default background bmp tile. If that doesn't work you're probably
using an old clock module, there used to be an incompatibility with NT, try updating
LSClock.dll.

Q.E7 What's with these modules having a .app extension? Aren't
they supposed to be .dll? What do I do with these?
Modules are DLL's (dynamic linked libraries) that, obviously, have a graphical interface.
As these act somewhat differently from most other DLL's that are unseen, many module
developers have decided on creating the .app extension to use in place of the .dll
extension to note this difference.
To use these modules in your step.rc, just reference them like normal, eg:
*Wharf "Spiffy New Module" nifty_bg.bmp @c:\litestep\spiffy.app

Q.F8 How can I get a Visual Basic module into the wharf?
You can't. VB, by itself, can't compile DLL's, which is what all wharf modules are.

Section G. General Litestep Problems

Q.F1 I lost my tray icons, how can I get them back?
If LiteStep crashes or you close it, then restart LiteStep (ie not recycling), LiteStep
will not regather your system tray. To get it back either restart the programs in it one
by one (by closing and reopening them in the Task Manager - hit Ctrl-Alt-Del), logoff and
log back on again or restart the computer.

Q.F2 My wharf just disappeared! How can I get it back?
There are a few ways to get LiteStep back running after a crash, but it will probably
still be unstable after this. It is best to save your work and restart the computer. To
get LiteStep running again:

Use run or recycle in your popup menu (if it still works).

If you have an Explorer window open, browse to your Litestep directory, and run
    litestep.exe

If you have any programs open, go to File - Open, browse to your Litestep directory,
change the view to "All files," right-click on litestep.exe, and click
    "Open."

Under NT, use the task manager to spawn a new process, and re-run litestep.exe.

Q.F4 Sometimes when I recycle, LiteStep appears to crash for no
reason and give me an error in French.
LiteStep doesn't seem to like recycling multiple times (ie more than 4 or 5), especially
under NT. Restarting the computer (or logging off and on) after every 3 or 4 recycles is a
good idea to protect yourself. Also try the command-line recycle, floach.ml.org/utilities/recycle.exe.

Q.F6 Some of my windows crash when I recycle.
This is due to a problem with the physical display of some windows during the recycle. Try
minimizing them all first, then recycle.

Q.F7 I use NT and whenever RAS connects, LiteStep crashes.
Double click on the connection monitor and unselect "Show Monitor next to system
time" in the preferences tab. This may be fixed in release 0.24.

Q.F8 How can I "nest" folders in the wharf or the popup menu?
You can't.

Section H. Virtual Window Manager

Q.F9 I lost a window! Help!
Desklite, a program written by Orcusbane (orcusbane@theglobe.com)
for this specific problem, will show you a list of all available programs/windows &
will center on the current window any program that you select. It's available at members.theglobe.com/orcusbane/
Or follow these steps:

Alt-Tab to the app (even though it's invisible),

press Alt-Space,

press M for 'Move,'

press one of your cursor keys once.

If you move your mouse, you'll find your lost app glued to the cursor.

From there you can drag it back into view.

(Todd Kadrie, tin_omen@mindless.com)

Q.F10 I installed the latest update, and now my VWM won't switch virtual windows.
The new VWM uses *Hotkey settings, like these:
*Hotkey Win Up !VWMUp
*Hotkey Win Down !VWMDown
*Hotkey Win Left !VWMLeft
*Hotkey Win Right !VWMRight
*Hotkey Win F1 !VWMDesk 1
*Hotkey Ctrl+Alt G !Gather
(Bryan Kilian, bryan@rucus.ru.ac.za)

Q.F11 So is there a parameter to the step.rc line for opening programs to a
predetermined virtual window?
Some folks have had some decent luck using WStart (a start command replacement that allows
you to specify position of the app to load, as well as priority, etc.) It even works
across the vwm positions (I think they're relative on a single large space). It's
available at ftp://altos.rnd.runnet.ru/pub/windows/WStart.exe
(Todd Kadrie, tin_omen@mindless.com)

Section I. Explorer Problems and Further Customization

Q.G1 What happened to my desktop icons / folders? Can I have them
back?
They're still in the same folder as they've always been. Under Win95 it's
c:\windows\desktop, under WinNT it's c:\winnt\profiles\%username%\desktop. It's easiest to
make a popup menu of your desktop folder (this is already in your step.rc). Also
check out the documentation on making desktop shortcuts.
The Drag Drop & Run module gives you some of that functionality, as well. Download the
module from floach.pimpin.net, and put it in your
Litestep folder, making the necessary changes to your step.rc file. Then simply write a
batch file with the following content:
copy %1 c:\windows\desktop\
or some other temporary directory of your choice. Place the batchfile in C:\ and manually
add the following content to your modules.ini:
[wharfddr]
programme1=c:\batchfile.bat
batchfile being the name of the batch file (you can call it whatever you like). Recycle,
and now whenever you drag a file to that first square in the 3x3 block on DDR, your file
gets copied to that
directory. Put the directory in your popup menu. Now, with DDR, you can even have up
to 9 different directories to drop stuff in. (Eric Arnoth, earnoth@UDel.Edu)

Q.G2 How can I get Find Files to work in LiteStep?
There are several ways to find files in LiteStep, here are a few of the best:

Get LSFind utility

Use a third party program such as Servant
    Salamander or PowerDesk.

Follow this set of steps (provided by Dave Chow, ircbob@usa.net)

Run Explorer temporarily

Select Tools > Find

Input the type of search you want

Select File > Save Search

Now point to the .fnd file created from the step.rc!

Q.G3 The recycle bin shortcut doesn't work.
There are many methods used to get a shortcut to the recycle bin:

Perhaps the neatest is a one line addition to your step.rc:

*Wharf "Recycle Bin" recyclebin.bmp RECYCLED

Another registry based solution is:

*Wharf "Recycle Bin" .extract=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\shell32.dll,31 explorer
        /root,,::{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Q.G4 Every time I start my machine while Litestep is loading a
white screen appears with all the shortcuts and wharf bar as black shadows.
The white screen is caused by Litestep not processing messages while loading modules and
startup programs. It just means that Windows can't update the background and
therefore just blanks it with the default brush (white). It's not dangerous at all, and is
not really a bug, in that nothing is broken. (Bryan Kilian, bryan@rucus.ru.ac.za)

Q.S9 Whenever I open Control Panel, Printers, or Explorer in NT, the old Windows shell
comes back.
This is mentioned in the documentation included with Litestep, but is worth repeating
here.

Run the Registry Editor (regedit.exe)

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Add a DWORD value named DesktopProcess and set its value to 1

Do the same in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Also take note that SP4 for NT has a bug in it that sometimes causes problems saving
DWORD values in the Registry.
If you're using IE4 or above, you must also go into your Internet settings, hit the
"Advanced" tab, and make sure "Browse in a new process" is checked.

Q.S0 NT is still popping up the old shell over Litestep. The FAQ answer didn't
help.
NT is very domineering when it comes to its shell. Either avoid using Explorer
altogether, kill any Explorer processes after you're done playing in Control Panel, or
switch Litestep from Current User to All Users:

Run the Registry Editor (regedit.exe)

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Remove the entry named Shell

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Change the value for the entry named Shell to the full path and name of litestep.exe (eg
    c:\litestep\litestep.exe)

Reboot.

Section J. Further Customization

Q.D6 Is there a utility that makes the window title bars look
different?
There are a few utilities that do this, here's a brief list:

Window Blinds

Window Pictures

eFX

Illumination

Q.S1 I would like a util that takes all the active tasks and puts icons for them in the
system tray.
There's an app called toggletray which will do this. The site is www.toggle.com. There is also Trayer, at http://home1.pacific.net.sg/~ngkf/trayer/.

Q.S2 I want to change the size of all maximized windows so I can see my desktop
shortcuts.
Get SetBorder.DLL from http://www.flum.net/dev.html
- it's a LoadModule for Litestep that does just that.

Q.S3 How can I have more than one wharf, like in some window managers for XWindows?
There is a page describing the process of getting two wharfs at http://litestep.cbj.net under tricks. (David
Monk, cyber@cbj.net)

Q.S5 I'm sick of using this stupid Explorer for browsing through my folders. What
else is there?

Section K. Problems With Other Applications

Q.H1 Sometimes when I load a directX reliant program (such as Quake
II) the taskbar remains, how do I get rid of it?
Just pressing<ALT><TAB> Alt-Tab a few times will get out of the game and back into it, that should
remedy your problem. Or disable the wharf, as it may be trying to draw itself on the
screen while you're playing.

Q.H2 My Compaq doesn't seem to use
explorer.exe as its default shell, can I still use LiteStep?
You can, you may need to follow some of the tips at www.compaq.com/athome/support/paqtip/20072.html
to help you.

Q.H3 I lost my playlist window in WinAmp,
now I can't get it back!
Edit the winamp.ini file and set wx=0 and wy=0. In future close the playlist window before
exiting WinAmp. If that doesn't work, delete winamp.ini, but beware this will reset a lot
of your winamp settings to default settings.

Q.H4 PhotoShop
palette windows have disappeared or appear on different virtual screens.
There are three solutions to this.

Toggle each palette window: hide window > show window.

Palette > Reset all tools (<CTRL><K>to reset palette options).

Always use PhotoShop in the same virtual window to avoid problems in the future.

Q.H5 Whenever I install a program, it doesn't add its entries to the start menu!

Open Regedit, then HKLM (or HKCU) \Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
    Version\Winlogon (for Win9x: progman.ini, [boot] section).

Change the shell="C:\litestep\litestep.exe" (or whatever) to
    shell="explorer.exe".

Run the Install Shield program, until the first MAIN dialog pops up.

Switch back to regedit (or progman.ini), and change the shell="explorer.exe"
    back to shell="C:\litestep\litestep.exe" (or whatever)

Switch back to the install shield program and continue the install.

NB: It is EXTREMELY important to do step 4, do not leave it out or Ultra-Bad Things
Will Happen(tm) :-)
Why this hack works and what is happening:
Install Shield (at least in some versions) starts by running a 16-bit app that looks at
the shell= setting, testing the string against "explorer.exe". This 16-bit
app then launches the 32-bit install program passing it various bits of info including
whether the shell is explorer.exe or not. The 32-bit program does not even bother to
perform the relevant shell functions to add groups/items if the shell is not explorer.exe.

Section L. Credits, Links, and Further Information

Q.I1 Who wrote the FAQ?
I have entirely lost track of all the contributors to the FAQ. So I'll just say that
you should read the credits at the bottom of manual.html in the doc subdirectory, and I've
marked answers with their originators, if known. Extra brownie points to Edwin Man
(|TheMAN|) for his creation of that nifty manual, the maintainer of the UFAQ (Shane), and
Brandon Williams (Floach) for #litestep. As for your humble author, Tim Lloyd
(Apollo18), I can be reached at omaha@tmbg.org via
email, in #litestep on the IRC network EFNet as Apollo18, on the web at http://a18.home.ml.org, or in real life at the
undergraduate laboratory at CU-Boulder where I spend far too much time working on my
aerospace engineering degree (or at the theatre working on my minor in theatre).

Q.I2 Is there a mailing list for LiteStep?
There are several at the moment, kindly hosted by Bryan Killian (MHolmesIV), bryan@rucus.ru.ac.za.

litestep@litestep.ru.ac.za - the main
list. You can subscribe to it by sending an email to litestep-subscribe@litestep.ru.ac.za
and follow the directions given to you.

devel@litestep.ru.ac.za - for development
and module coding issues, this should be a technical list and will hopefully turn out to
be a programming help area. If you're into that sort of stuff, send mail to: devel-subscribe@litestep.ru.ac.za

graphics@litestep.ru.ac.za - for
graphics and theme discussions. This is not for mailing graphics to people, as this is
antisocial ;-). More of a list where people with theme or graphical issues and air their
    problems. Subscribe by emailing graphics-subscribe@litestep.ru.ac.za

Q.I3 How do I unsubscribe from the LiteStep mailing list?
Three things need to happen for a successful unsubscription:

you must be subscribed to the list

you must send your unsubscribe message from the same address as the subscribe one

you must answer the email it sends you in response.

Normally what happens is that people use a different subscribe address to their email
address (envelope address not from: address) which normally comes about when they use the
web based subscriber on litestep.base.org.
There are three ways to unsubscribe:

mail to litestep-unsubscribe@litestep.ru.ac.za and answer the mail it sends.

mail to litestep-unsubscribe-user=machine.com@litestep.ru.ac.za

mail to litestep-request@litestep.ru.ac.za with unsubscribe user@host.com in the message
    subject or body.
